Laura Limbourg

Bio

Laura Limbourg (1996) was born in Antwerp and lives in the Czech Republic where she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Martin Mainer and later Josef Bolf. The artist was profoundly influenced by her study stay in Taiwan in 2020 where she witnessed widespread prostitution and sex tourism which became a central motif in her canvases. However, she has taken on this sad subject in her own way, capturing the women as strong and confident characters often accompanied by the tiger as their protector. She creates her characteristic unprimed canvases with diluted acrylic paints without preparatory sketches and alterations.

Lately she has depicted persons from her closest surroundings on tennis courts and in diverse shared moments, and has been intrigued by traditional shapes of porcelain and ceramics which she sculpts herself, completing them with decors inspired by her travels to Asia and the United States. In 2020, she received the Art Critics Award for Young Painters, and her artworks are represented in numerous international collections.
