Simulacrum
The Simulacrum sculpture flows between two timeless principles of being: reality and creation, nature and artificiality. Reality created by us and reality creating us. The title of the work alludes to art as such – an imitation, image of a person or thing, originally used to define a painting or sculpture, usually of some kind of god. Later a term for an image without the substance and qualities of the original, an empty shell or a hollow image. This is where the idea of a cave as a space hollowed by natural forces comes from, alluding to the dawn of art – cave paintings and Plato’s cave as an allegory of the state of the world and its residents. A cave portrait is a peephole into the subconscious, revisiting the birth of human thought.
