Seat of Mercy
The ideas behind this relief embrace fragments of personal history and dialogue with art history. The balanced figurative composition contains a confrontation of worlds and diverse epochs, styles, and stories, which are not to be easily untangled, in order not to harm the delight of visual harmony. Sculptor Richard Štipl draws inspiration from intricate art history, selecting motifs linked to the strong moments of the evolution of civilization which attract him based on personal learning and random encounters. The wall relief Seat of Mercy features numerous motifs adopted from existing works in various art fields that fascinate the artist. The main motif renders the oversized legs from the Gothic relief Altar of Zlíchov while the backdrop is borrowed from the relief of St. Anne in Český Krumlov. A key role in the image is attributed to the figure of the soldier from the Kiss of Judas in the Garden of Olives bringing together various spheres of the image. The relief further features figures that played a major role in the life of the artist – a figure from the ballet Afternoon of a Faun, figures from the paintings of Francis Bacon, Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, and Batman, Štipl’s first superhero after his relocation to Canada. The work is an archetype of human thought and art speaking to human civilization for centuries. To the artist, it becomes a living matter which can be reinterpreted with new contexts of the time
