Forbidden Fruit

The panels on this screen represent an imaginary wall in the Garden of Eden and capture a classical theme in a new guise both in terms of meaning and material in a detailed rendition thanks to the Vitrum Vivum glassmaking technology. The central motif of evil takes several forms, growing as a unifying element through all three panels, rising like a serpent from the lying figure of Satan feigning disinterest on a wooden platform. His true intentions are revealed by his clenched fist and clawed foot waiting for his “victim.” The left panel depicts Adam surrounded by fantastic plants gazing at the fruit from which the snake gazes back as a symbol of warning against snakebite and fall of the newly created human. On the right, we recognize Eve facing away, her figure surrounded by the snake and overgrown with flora. In the central panel, the tree of knowledge overlooks the scene and the central head with hair of coiling snakes alludes to the ancient Gorgon.
