Candlestick
Originally designed in 1983, the object is a variant of so-called multi-vases, where the artist envisioned multiple possibilities of use as in most of his applied objects, and not an object per se. Seeking neither aesthetic surprise nor new functional variants, the artist wants to discover variants of meaning that can be related to the usual form of the object embedded in our minds. Candlestick is inspired by Czech Cubism which influenced the works of Milan Knížák in the 1970s, when he designed a furniture collection which he himself labelled as post-Cubist. The collection included visually powerful objects with sharp lines and almost aggressive look. Between 1971 and 1989, the regime in Czechoslovakia did not allow the artist to fully participate in the art market, and since he was not in touch with any glassworks and factories, he created numerous sketches and drawings of realizations in the fields of design, architecture and fashion which prove the artist’s bottomless imagination.
